Honda & Acura Diagnostics in Anderson, SC
Most shops plug in a $40 OBD reader, see a P0420 code, and quote you a catalytic converter. We use the actual Honda Diagnostic System the dealer uses — and we read it like a tech who works on Hondas every day. Nalley's Automotive has been Anderson, SC's Honda and Acura diagnostic specialist since 1987, and we don't throw parts at problems.
What Are Honda Diagnostics?
A real diagnostic isn't "reading the code" — codes are the symptom, not the diagnosis. A P0301 misfire on cylinder 1 could be a coil, an injector, low compression, a vacuum leak, a wiring fault, or a PCM update. Pulling the code takes 30 seconds; figuring out which of those it actually is takes a Honda Diagnostic System, mode 6 readiness data, freeze-frame analysis, and a tech who's seen it before.
We run the same Honda HDS the dealer uses, plus a J2534 pass-through for module reflashes. That means bidirectional control of ABS, VSA, TPMS, SRS, EPB, and HVAC actuators — and access to the Honda TSB database so we know which complaints already have a published fix. You leave with an actual answer, in writing, with the data printout to back it up.
Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs Diagnostics
Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.
Check engine light is on or flashing
A solid CEL is "diagnose this week." A flashing CEL means an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the catalytic converter — stop driving and call us. We pull current and pending codes plus freeze-frame data.
ABS, VSA, or Brake System warning
Generic scanners can't read Honda's VSA module. We use HDS to pull wheel-speed sensor live data, yaw rate, steering angle, and master cylinder pressure — all the things that actually trigger these lights.
SRS / airbag light won't go away
SRS codes need the right tool to read AND clear. Generic readers can't clear B-codes on Honda — and clock-spring codes need bidirectional reset. We have the right tool.
TPMS light blinking then solid
Blinking-then-solid = system fault, not low pressure. Could be a dead sensor battery, a re-learn issue after tire rotation, or a receiver module. HDS reads each sensor's ID and battery state.
Intermittent stalling or no-start
These are the hardest problems to solve without data logging. We capture freeze-frames and mode 6 data, then use HDS live data while the symptom is occurring — not after.
Rough idle with no codes set
No-code drivability problems are where mode 6 and live fuel trims earn their keep. Long-term fuel trims over +/- 8% tell us something is off before a code ever sets.
Honda CR-V 1.5T fuel-in-oil concern
There's a specific Honda TSB and a sampling procedure for this. We pull the right data, check oil dilution, and apply the updated software if your VIN is in the affected range.
P0420 / P0430 catalyst efficiency codes
Before condemning a \$1,200 cat, we test upstream/downstream O2 sensor switching, fuel trims, and run a catalyst efficiency test. Half the time it's a sensor, not the converter.
Battery dies after sitting overnight
Parasitic draw diagnosis. We pull a millivolt-drop test on the fuse panels, isolate the offending circuit, and identify the module that won't go to sleep — usually a BCM, audio head unit, or aftermarket add-on.
Honda Sensing / AcuraWatch error messages
Radar, camera, and ADAS faults need HDS to read. Some require static or dynamic re-calibration after a windshield replacement or alignment — we can do both.
Transmission shifting hard or flaring
Live data on input/output shaft speeds, line pressure, and clutch pressure tells us if it's a solenoid, a valve body, or a clutch pack — before you commit to a \$4k transmission.
Multiple warning lights at once
Usually a single root cause — a CAN bus fault, a bad ground, or a dying battery confusing every module. We diagnose the network, not each light separately.
Our Diagnostics Process at Nalley's
No surprises, no upsells. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your Honda or Acura to us.
Detailed interview
When does it happen — cold, hot, on a hill, after a fill-up? What have you already replaced? Half of diagnostic time is asking the right questions before we ever plug in.
Honda HDS factory scan
Full system scan: PCM, TCM, ABS/VSA, SRS, BCM, gauge, HVAC, immobilizer, TPMS, ADAS. Current codes, pending codes, history codes, and freeze-frame data — all captured.
Mode 6 + live data review
Mode 6 readiness monitors show what the PCM is watching that hasn't set a code yet. Live data shows fuel trims, O2 switching, MAF g/sec, ignition advance — the stuff that finds intermittents.
Physical inspection with photos
Every diagnostic includes a visual: wiring chafes, mouse damage, vacuum leaks, oil-soaked connectors. Photos go in your report — no "trust me, it's bad."
Targeted testing
Once we have a working theory, we test it: scope a sensor signal, smoke-test for vacuum leaks, current-ramp an injector, do a pin-out at the PCM. We confirm before we condemn.
Written diagnostic report
You get a printed report: codes, data snapshots, what we tested, what we found, and the recommended repair with a line-item estimate. The diagnostic fee applies toward the repair if you proceed with us.
Repair, then verify
After the fix, we clear codes, drive a Honda-specific drive cycle to set readiness monitors, and re-scan. We don't hand it back until every monitor is "Ready" and no new codes appear.
24/24 written warranty
24 months / 24,000 miles on parts and labor. If a misdiagnosis on our end leads to a wrong repair, we make it right — that's not just policy, it's in writing.
Common Diagnostics Issues by Model
Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.
Civic
10th-gen 1.5T Civics throw P0172/P0175 from fuel-in-oil dilution before they throw the actual CEL. We catch it on mode 6 and confirm with a fresh oil sample.
Accord
J35 Accords throw P3400-series codes when VCM solenoids fail. Easy to confuse with a misfire — HDS distinguishes them in seconds and saves a $600 misdiagnosis.
CR-V
2017+ CR-V 1.5T has a TSB-documented oil dilution issue with a specific software update. We check your VIN against the bulletin and reflash via J2534 when applicable.
Pilot
Pilot transmission shudder codes (P0741, P0780-series) are often misdiagnosed as needing a rebuild — frequently it's a torque converter lock-up issue we can confirm with live data.
Odyssey
Odyssey VCM-related misfires (P0301, P0304) often only appear in 3-cylinder mode. We capture them with HDS while driving, not from a parked code pull.
Acura MDX
SH-AWD MDXes throw rear-differential codes when the magnetic clutch coil ages. The code reads like a wheel-speed sensor; live data tells the real story.
Acura TLX
TLX A-Spec and Type S have a more complex network — we use HDS to scan every module rather than missing one and chasing the wrong light.
Acura RDX
2019+ RDX K20C4 turbo has its own boost and wastegate diagnostics that require HDS to read the electronic actuator position properly.
What Does Diagnostics Cost?
Diagnostics is the one service where you absolutely get what you pay for. A $40 "free scan" at the parts store reads a code — that's it. A real diagnostic takes 45 minutes to 2 hours of tech time, the right factory tool, and someone who can interpret the data.
Our flat diagnostic fee applies toward the repair if you proceed with us. If the problem turns into a multi-module CAN bus or intermittent electrical issue, we'll quote any additional time up front before we keep digging. No surprise hours added to the bill.
Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

Why Choose Nalley's for Diagnostics?
Factory Honda HDS
Not a generic OBD reader. The same tool the dealer uses — bidirectional control, TSB data, real freeze-frame and mode 6 analysis.
No parts-cannon diagnosis
We confirm a bad part before we replace it. Scope, multimeter, smoke machine, pressure tester — we use them all.
TSB and recall lookup
We check your VIN against open Honda service bulletins and recalls. If there's an updated part or reflash for your symptom, we tell you.
Written diagnostic report
You leave with a printed report: codes, data, what we tested, what we found, recommended repair — and the fee applies to the work.
Honda/Acura only
We work on these platforms every single day. Pattern recognition matters in diagnostics — we've seen your symptom before.

Frequently Asked Questions
Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.
Why pay you to diagnose when AutoZone scans for free?
The parts-store scan reads a code and recommends a part. It can't do live data, mode 6, bidirectional control, or freeze-frames — which is where the actual diagnosis happens. People who follow the free-scan recommendation often replace 2-3 parts before solving the problem. A real diagnostic costs less than the wrong part.
What's a Honda HDS and why does it matter?
HDS is the Honda Diagnostic System — the factory scan tool dealers use. It reads modules generic scanners can't (SRS B-codes, VSA, EPB, ADAS), runs bidirectional tests, and accesses Honda's TSB database. On a Honda or Acura, you can't do real diagnostics without it.
My check engine light is on but the car drives fine. Is it urgent?
Bring it in within a week. Some codes (evap leak, loose gas cap) aren't urgent. Others (misfire, lean code, knock retard, cat efficiency) will damage expensive parts if ignored. A $130 scan tells you which category you're in.
The light went off on its own. Do I still need a scan?
Probably yes. Pending codes and freeze-frame data stay in the PCM's history even after the light clears. Whatever set it can come back — usually at the worst time. A 30-minute scan reads the history and tells you what triggered it.
Will the diagnostic fee apply toward the repair?
Yes. If you have us do the recommended repair, the standard diagnostic fee gets credited against the labor. If you only want the diagnosis (to do the work yourself or get a second opinion), you pay the diagnostic fee and we hand you the report.
How long does a diagnostic take?
A standard CEL or ABS diagnostic is usually 45-90 minutes. Intermittent problems (no-start that won't reproduce, dropouts, dies-when-hot) can take several hours because we have to capture the fault while it's happening. We tell you up front which camp you're in.
Can you reflash my Honda's PCM if there's a TSB?
Yes. We use a J2534 pass-through device and a current Honda subscription to push the same software updates the dealer would. If your VIN is in the affected range for an open TSB, we can apply it without a dealer trip.
Will independent diagnostics void my Honda warranty?
No. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) makes it illegal to deny warranty coverage just because an independent shop touched the car. We use the same Honda HDS and OEM-grade parts, so warranty claims stay intact.
My dealer said it needs a new transmission. Can you give a second opinion?
Yes — and we do this often. We pull live transmission data, run the Honda-specific clutch pressure tests, and check for known software updates. About a third of "needs a new transmission" quotes turn out to be a solenoid, a torque converter lockup, or a TSB reflash.
Do you do pre-purchase inspections with diagnostics?
Yes. We do full HDS scans on used Honda and Acura purchases — full module sweep, history codes, readiness monitors, plus a complete physical inspection. It's the single best money you can spend before signing on a used car.
