The Basics

What Is Honda Suspension Repair?

Suspension on a modern Honda or Acura covers struts and shocks, control arms, ball joints, sway bar end links and bushings, subframe bushings, steering tie rods, wheel bearings, and — on Acura A-Spec and Type S models — electronic adaptive damping (MagneRide / Adaptive Damper System). Get any of these wrong and the car feels off — vague steering, clunking over bumps, uneven tire wear, or a soft floaty ride that wasn't there from the factory.

We use KYB OEM-equivalent or genuine Honda struts (depending on what's in stock and what fits your priorities), and we always perform a 4-wheel alignment after any control arm, strut, or tie rod work. An alignment isn't an upsell on suspension work — it's a requirement, because suspension geometry changes any time those parts come off the car.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs Suspension Repair

Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.

Clunking or knocking over bumps

Worn sway bar end links are #1. Worn strut mounts and control arm bushings are #2 and #3. We isolate which on the lift before recommending parts — they sound similar but the fixes are very different.

Steering feels loose or vague

Inner or outer tie rod wear, worn rack bushings, or worn control arm bushings. We check play at every joint — not just "looks tight" but with a pry bar against spec.

Car pulls to one side

Could be alignment, a sticking brake, uneven tire wear, or a collapsed control arm bushing. We check tire pressure first, then alignment, then suspension. No assumptions.

Uneven or rapid tire wear

Inside-edge wear = camber out of spec. Cupping = worn struts. Center wear = overinflation. Feathering = toe out of spec. Tire wear tells us where to look.

Bouncy or floaty ride

Worn struts/shocks losing damping. Honda struts typically need replacement around 80-120k miles. We bounce-test and check for fluid leaks at the strut body.

Squeaking from suspension when going slow

Often dry or worn sway bar bushings, or a control arm bushing splitting. We can sometimes lube and reset; sometimes replacement is needed. We diagnose first.

Acura MagneRide error / "Damper System"

Electronic damper fault — could be a wiring issue, a damper itself, or the ADS module. We have HDS and can read live damper-current data to isolate which.

Vibration in steering wheel at highway speed

Tire balance, bent wheel, worn wheel bearing, or worn strut mount. We road-force balance and check each separately — not just rotate tires and hope.

Front end nose-dive under braking

Worn front struts that have lost damping. Especially common on Pilots and Odysseys with high mileage. New struts restore the original braking feel immediately.

Humming or growling that changes with speed

Wheel bearing — usually front. Hum gets louder with speed, sometimes changes when you weight or unweight a side in a turn. We confirm with a chassis ear before replacing.

Steering wheel off-center

Alignment is out — usually toe. Sometimes after a tie rod replacement or a curb hit. A full 4-wheel alignment puts the wheel back where it belongs and sets toe to Honda spec.

Car sits lower on one corner

Collapsed spring, broken strut, or in rare cases a leaking air spring (some Acura RL models). We measure ride height at each corner against OEM spec.

How We Work

Our Suspension Repair Process at Nalley's

No surprises, no upsells. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your Honda or Acura to us.

1

Listen and drive

A 10-minute test drive with the customer riding along finds 80% of suspension problems faster than any lift inspection. We listen to what you're hearing in real time.

2

Lift inspection with photos

Every ball joint, bushing, tie rod, sway bar link, strut mount, and strut body checked for play, leak, or damage. Photos of every concern emailed before any quote.

3

Honest assessment

If your sway bar links are just starting to clunk and the rest of the suspension is fine, we tell you that — and quote \$180 for links, not \$1,800 for "the whole front end."

4

Written line-item estimate

No bundled "front end overhaul" pricing. You see each part, each labor line, and any alignment fee — so you decide what to do now vs later.

5

OEM-spec parts

KYB struts/shocks (the OEM supplier for many Hondas), Moog or genuine Honda chassis parts. We avoid the bargain-bin parts that fail in 20k miles.

6

Proper installation procedure

Bushings torqued at ride height, not in the air (or they pre-load and tear). Strut mount orientation correct. Boots seated properly. Small details that make parts last.

7

4-wheel alignment after the work

Required after any control arm, strut, or tie rod work. We use a Hunter alignment rack and align to OEM spec — not just "within green" but to factory preferred values.

8

24/24 written warranty

24 months / 24,000 miles on parts and labor. If a part we installed wears out inside that window, we replace it on us.

Model-Specific Expertise

Common Suspension Repair Issues by Model

Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.

Civic

10th and 11th-gen Civic front sway bar links are a known wear item — clunking around 50-70k miles. Easy fix, $180-ish, but you have to confirm it's the links and not the strut mounts.

Accord

V6 Accords are heavier on front struts; we usually see them due around 90-110k. The compliance bushings in the lower control arm wear before the ball joints — we check both.

CR-V

CR-Vs go through rear shocks faster than front struts due to cargo loading. Also prone to rear sway bar bushing wear at 80k+. We see it constantly.

Pilot

Heavy Pilots (especially towing models) eat front struts by 80k and rear shocks by 100k. Worth the upgrade to OEM-spec heavy-duty if you tow.

Odyssey

Odysseys with the EX-L and Touring trims have a rear self-leveling shock (some years) that fails — we replace with conventional shocks for a much better ride and lower cost.

Acura MDX

MDXes have specific compliance bushings and (on Advance trims) air suspension components. We diagnose air-ride faults with HDS rather than blindly replacing struts.

Acura TLX

Type S TLX uses MagneRide adaptive dampers — we service these properly with the correct fluid spec and HDS calibration. Non-Type S TLX uses conventional KYB-spec struts.

Acura RDX

2019+ RDX A-Spec uses adaptive dampers; standard RDX uses conventional. We always confirm which before quoting parts.

Honest Pricing

What Does Suspension Repair Cost?

Suspension pricing varies by which corner, which part, and what alignment is needed afterward. Front struts on an Accord are different labor than front struts on an MDX. Adaptive damper assemblies on a Type S or A-Spec are roughly 3-4x the cost of conventional struts. We tell you exactly what your car has — and what each option costs — before any work.

Always include alignment in your budget for suspension work. Any control arm, strut, or tie rod replacement changes alignment geometry — skipping the alignment means new tires wear out in 20k miles. We include alignment in our suspension estimates so there are no surprises.

Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

Why Nalley's

Why Choose Nalley's for Suspension Repair?

OEM-spec parts only

KYB (often the OEM supplier), genuine Honda, or Moog premium. No bargain-bin parts that fail at 20k miles.

Bushings torqued at ride height

Suspension bushings must be tightened with the car at ride height — not in the air. Skipping this tears bushings in months. We do it the right way.

Alignment after every job

Any time a control arm, strut, or tie rod comes off, alignment changes. We include 4-wheel alignment in our suspension estimates.

MagneRide / ADS capable

Acura adaptive damper systems require HDS to diagnose and calibrate. We handle them — not many independent shops can.

Photo inspection report

You see what we see — pictures of every leak, every torn bushing, every loose ball joint — before any work is recommended.

24/24 written warranty

24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labor. In writing — no fine print or exclusions for "wear items."

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.

How long do struts last on a Honda?

Typically 80,000-120,000 miles. Highway drivers get the most life; pothole-heavy commutes and heavy loads cut it dramatically. Once a strut starts leaking or fails the bounce test, it's due — driving on worn struts wears tires unevenly and ruins braking.

Do I really need an alignment after suspension work?

Yes — any time a control arm, strut, tie rod, or steering rack component comes off the car, alignment is affected. Skipping it means new tires wear unevenly within 10-20k miles, which costs more than the alignment did. We include alignment in our suspension estimates so there are no surprises.

My car clunks over bumps. What's the most likely cause?

On Hondas and Acuras, sway bar end links are by far the most common cause — they're inexpensive and easy to replace. Worn strut mounts and control arm bushings are next. We isolate which on the lift and replace only what's actually worn.

Should I use OEM Honda struts or aftermarket?

KYB makes many of the original struts for Honda — so KYB OEM-equivalent gives you genuine Honda ride quality at a better price. Genuine Honda boxed parts are available if you want them. We avoid bargain aftermarket struts (Monroe Quick-Strut, off-brand) because they don't match Honda's tuning.

Will independent suspension repair void my Honda warranty?

No. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) makes it illegal to deny warranty coverage just because an independent shop did the work — as long as proper parts and procedures are used. We use OEM-spec parts and document everything.

My Acura has MagneRide / adaptive dampers. Can you service those?

Yes. We have Honda HDS access to read live damper current data, run electronic actuator tests, and properly initialize new dampers after replacement. Not many independent shops can do this — most send these jobs to the dealer.

How much should suspension work cost on my Honda?

Varies enormously by what's actually wrong. Sway bar links: a few hundred. Both front struts including alignment: $700-1,200 depending on model. Full front control arm replacement: $1,200-2,000. We always quote in writing before any work — no surprises.

My steering wheel is off-center. Is that an alignment problem?

Almost always yes — usually toe out of spec. Can happen after hitting a curb or a pothole, or after a tie rod replacement that wasn't centered properly. A 4-wheel alignment will put it back to OEM spec.

My tires are wearing on the inside edges. What's causing it?

Camber out of spec, usually combined with toe out of spec. Could be from a hit, worn control arm bushings, or just gradual drift over time. We alignment-check and inspect the suspension before recommending what to fix.

Is it safe to drive with a bad ball joint?

Not for long. A failing ball joint can separate — when it does, the wheel folds under and you lose steering control immediately. If we identify a ball joint with significant play, we recommend replacement before you drive home. It's a safety call, not an upsell.
