Honda 1.5T Oil Dilution Repair (CR-V, Civic) in Anderson, SC

If your 2017+ CR-V or 2016+ Civic 1.5T smells like gasoline on the dipstick — or worse, the oil level is going UP between changes — you have Honda's well-documented 1.5T oil dilution issue. Honda issued multiple PCM software updates and extended the powertrain warranty to 8 years / 100,000 miles on affected VINs. We diagnose it, verify your warranty status, and fix it right.

The Basics

What Is 1.5T Oil Dilution?

On Honda's L15B7 (1.5T direct-injection turbo) engine, raw fuel can sneak past the piston rings during cold-start enrichment, especially on short trips that don't bring the oil up to full operating temperature. The fuel mixes into the engine oil. Over thousands of miles of cold short trips, the oil level on the dipstick can actually RISE — that's fuel volume adding to oil volume — and the diluted oil loses lubrication ability fast.

Honda issued service bulletins and multiple PCM (engine computer) updates that change cold-start fuel delivery, idle speed, and warm-up strategy to reduce dilution. They also extended the powertrain warranty to 8 years / 100,000 miles on affected 2017-2018 CR-Vs and many 1.5T Civics. The fix is the software update plus an oil change to remove the contaminated oil — but if the software hasn't been done, an oil change alone is a temporary bandaid that gets re-diluted in weeks.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs Oil Dilution Repair

Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.

Oil level RISING on the dipstick

The signature symptom. Healthy engines lose oil. A diluted 1.5T gains it — that's fuel adding to the volume.

Gasoline smell on the dipstick

Pull the dipstick, smell it. Healthy engine oil smells like oil. Diluted 1.5T oil smells distinctly like raw gasoline.

Oil looks thin / watery on dipstick

Fuel-diluted oil is visibly less viscous than fresh oil. Less film strength means more wear.

Mostly short trips in cold weather

Worse in winter, worse on trips under 15 minutes. If that's your daily driving pattern, you're high-risk.

Misfires or rough idle (cold)

Excess fuel and worn rings can cause cylinder misfires. P0301-P0304 codes.

Reduced fuel economy

Counterintuitively, dilution often comes with worse MPG — the cold-start enrichment that causes it also wastes fuel.

PCM software is original (not updated)

If your VIN qualifies for Honda's dilution-related PCM update and it hasn't been done, dilution will keep happening no matter how often you change the oil.

A/C performance affected (CR-V early units)

Honda's first updates also revised A/C and heat strategy on some 2017-2018 CR-Vs to keep oil warming on faster.

Coolant low at the same time

Late-stage dilution can correlate with coolant loss into the cylinder. We test for combustion gases in coolant when symptoms point that way.

You drive in the SC mountains

Cold-start, then up I-85 or 28 to elevation in winter — these are exactly the conditions that worsen 1.5T dilution.

How We Work

Our Oil Dilution Repair Process at Nalley's

No surprises, no upsells. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your Honda or Acura to us.

1

Check oil level and condition

We pull the dipstick first. If it's over-full, smells like gas, and is thin, we know exactly what we're dealing with.

2

Honda HDS scan

We pull misfire counts, fuel trims, and any open Honda software-update flags for your VIN — same data the dealer sees.

3

PCM software version check

We verify which PCM software is currently in your car and which Honda updates apply. If updates are missing, we say so.

4

Verify warranty status on your VIN

If your CR-V or Civic 1.5T qualifies for Honda's 8yr/100k powertrain extension, we tell you straight — sometimes the dealer should do the work for free.

5

Apply applicable Honda software updates

Where we can apply Honda-released reflashes that change cold-start fuel and warm-up strategy, we do.

6

Oil change with correct Honda 0W-20

Drain the diluted oil, replace with fresh Honda-spec 0W-20 and an OEM filter. New oil, fresh start.

7

Inspect for ring/cylinder damage

Late-stage cases sometimes have ring or bore damage. We do a compression / leak-down test if symptoms warrant it.

8

24/24 warranty + follow-up oil check

We have you back in 1,500-2,000 miles to re-check oil level and condition — to confirm the fix is holding.

Model-Specific Expertise

Common Oil Dilution Repair Issues by Model

Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.

CR-V 1.5T (2017-2018)

Ground zero for 1.5T oil dilution. Honda issued the largest extended-warranty program here (8yr/100k powertrain). We verify VIN coverage before doing anything else.

CR-V 1.5T (2019-2022)

Improved with later PCM updates but still affected, especially in cold short-trip use. We still see diluted oil on these.

Civic 1.5T (2016-2019)

1.5T Civic (Hatch, EX-T, Si has different engine). Same dilution mechanism, Honda has issued PCM updates here too.

Civic 1.5T (2020-2025)

Later updates have reduced — not eliminated — dilution. Short-trip CR-V/Civic users still need to watch oil level.

Civic Si (K20C1)

NOT affected — Civic Si uses the K20C1 2.0T, a different engine family. No dilution issue.

Accord 1.5T (2018+)

Same L15B7 family. Less commonly diagnosed because Accord buyers tend to drive longer trips, but the engine is the same.

CR-V Hybrid

Not a 1.5T — uses a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine in the i-MMD hybrid system. No dilution issue.

When dilution becomes damage

If dilution is ignored for a long time, ring wear and cylinder scoring become the issue and an oil change can\'t fix it. We test compression to find out which camp you\'re in.

Honest Pricing

What Does Oil Dilution Repair Cost?

The diagnosis itself is straightforward — we check oil level, smell the dipstick, scan the car, and verify PCM software version. From there it's usually one of two paths: if your VIN qualifies for the Honda extended powertrain warranty, the dealer should handle the software update at no charge to you (we'll tell you so honestly).

If you're outside the warranty window, the fix is an oil change with the correct Honda 0W-20, plus any applicable software update we can apply. If long-term dilution has caused mechanical damage — worn rings, scored cylinders — that's a different (and much larger) conversation. We test before we recommend, and we won't sell you an engine repair for what's actually a software fix.

Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

Typical Honda / Acura Ranges

  • Dilution diagnosis + HDS scan $140 – $190

Applied toward repair if you proceed with us.

  • Oil change (Honda OEM 0W-20) $75 – $105

    OEM Honda filter, exact-spec viscosity.

  • PCM software update (applicable) $80 – $140

When Honda has released an applicable reflash we can apply.

  • Compression / leak-down test $180 – $280

Recommended for late-stage cases with misfires.

  • Spark plug replacement (4) $160 – $240

    Often fouled by long-term dilution.

  • Engine replacement (severe damage) $6,500 – $9,500

Rare, but the honest worst-case for ignored dilution.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.

Is rising oil level on the dipstick actually bad?

Yes — significantly. Healthy engines burn or lose a tiny amount of oil between changes; they don't gain it. Rising oil level means fuel is mixing in, and fuel-diluted oil loses film strength fast. Continued driving on it can score cylinder walls.

Will a regular oil change fix the dilution?

Temporarily. If the underlying PCM software hasn't been updated, the new oil will re-dilute over the next few thousand miles, especially in cold weather. The real fix is the Honda software update PLUS the oil change.

How do I know if my car is under Honda's extended warranty?

Bring it in — we'll look up your VIN against Honda's open service bulletins and extended-warranty campaigns. If it qualifies, we'll tell you to take it to the Honda dealer for the free fix. We won't charge you for work Honda will do at no cost.

Why does this happen on 1.5T but not on bigger engines?

Direct injection plus small displacement plus turbocharging means cold-start enrichment is more aggressive, and some fuel washes past the rings before the cylinder fully seals. Honda has been improving the calibration with each PCM update.

I take mostly short trips in winter. Am I doomed?

You're high-risk, but not doomed. Get the latest PCM update applied, change oil more often than the maintenance minder calls for (every 4,000-5,000 miles), and take the car for a longer drive once a week to fully cook off any fuel that has entered the oil.

What does diluted oil smell like?

Strong gasoline smell. If you pull your dipstick and it smells like gas station forecourt, that's dilution. Healthy oil smells like oil — a bit burnt, but not like fuel.

Can the dilution damage my turbo?

Yes — turbos depend on a strong oil film at very high temperatures. Diluted oil loses that film strength quickly. Long-term dilution can shorten turbo life significantly, on top of cylinder/ring damage.

Should I switch to a thicker oil?

No. Honda specs 0W-20 for cold-start oil flow on this engine. Thicker oil reduces cold-flow rate and can actually worsen wear during the exact cold-start conditions where dilution happens. Use the spec.

How much cheaper than the Honda dealer are you?

On the diagnosis and oil change, 20-30% less. On the software update — if Honda is covering it under the extension, dealer is FREE and we tell you to go there. We're not trying to take work that's rightfully yours under warranty.

What if the engine is already damaged from long-term dilution?

We do a compression and leak-down test to know for sure. If rings or cylinders are damaged, we'll lay out replacement engine vs. quality used engine options with real pricing — and tell you honestly what the right call is for your specific car.

Smell Gas on the Dipstick? Don't Wait.

1.5T oil dilution is fixable when caught early. Book a diagnosis — we'll check your warranty status and tell you the honest path forward.
