Honda & Acura Power Steering Repair in Anderson, SC
Honda power steering systems split clean into two worlds: hydraulic on most cars through about 2012, and electric (EPS) on everything modern. They share zero parts and require completely different diagnostics. Nalley's services both correctly in Anderson, SC — and we use only genuine Honda PSF on hydraulic systems, because ATF will eat the seals in 6 months.
What Is Power Steering Repair?
Power steering repair covers everything from a hose leak to a complete rack-and-pinion replacement to recalibrating a Honda EPS torque sensor with HDS. The diagnostic path depends entirely on which system you have. Hydraulic systems use a belt-driven pump, a high-pressure hose, a low-pressure return, a reservoir, and the rack itself — leaks and pump bearings are the usual failures.
Electric Power Steering (EPS) — standard on Civics from 2006, most Accords from 2013, and all modern Acuras — uses a motor and torque sensor on the steering column or rack. There is no fluid. When it fails, you'll see an EPS warning, a sudden loss of assist, or a calibration code. The fix is rarely "add fluid" — it\'s torque sensor recalibration via HDS, motor replacement, or a software update.
Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs Power Steering Repair
Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.
Whining or moaning when turning
Hydraulic systems only — typically a low fluid level or a failing pump bearing. Loudest at lock-to-lock.
Heavy or stiff steering
On hydraulic: low fluid, failed pump, or clogged rack passages. On EPS: torque sensor failure, motor failure, or low-voltage / battery issue.
EPS warning light on dash
Honda's EPS will throw a dash warning and may disable assist entirely. We pull EPS codes with HDS — generic OBD readers don't see these.
Fluid leak under the car
Hydraulic only. Honda PSF is dark amber; rack leaks usually show at the bellows, pump leaks at the front of the engine.
Steering wheel off-center after impact
EPS torque sensor needs recalibration via HDS. Many shops align the car and skip this — leaves the system confused.
Sudden loss of assist while driving
EPS shut-down — protective mode. Could be over-temperature, low voltage, or sensor fault. We diagnose with HDS, don't guess.
Clunk when turning at low speed
Inner tie rod, outer tie rod, or rack bushings worn. Sometimes the rack itself if mileage is high.
Steering wanders or feels disconnected
EPS torque sensor reading drift. Often fixed with a calibration in HDS — no parts needed.
Belt squeal at startup
Hydraulic only. PS pump pulley misaligned or belt tensioner failing.
Burnt smell from engine bay
Hydraulic only. PSF leaking onto hot exhaust — fire risk if ignored.
Our Power Steering Repair Process at Nalley's
No surprises, no upsells. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your Honda or Acura to us.
Identify your system (hydraulic vs EPS)
Sounds obvious — but we've seen shops add fluid to EPS reservoirs that don't exist and fight EPS codes by replacing belts. First step matters.
Honda HDS scan
EPS modules talk over Honda's body CAN. We pull torque sensor data, motor current draw, voltage history — not just dash warnings.
Physical inspection with photos
Hose condition, rack boot wear, fluid leaks, pump bearings, drive belt — photographed and reported before any work.
Hydraulic fluid test
Honda PSF should be dark amber, not black or contaminated. Black fluid = burnt seals, which means full flush + likely pump replacement.
Honda PSF only on hydraulic systems
Honda's PSF is a unique blend — ATF, generic PS fluid, and "universal" fluids destroy Honda rack seals within months. We use OEM only.
EPS torque sensor recalibration via HDS
After alignment, suspension work, or torque sensor service, EPS needs calibration. HDS performs the procedure properly.
Road test + assist verification
Lock-to-lock at idle, parking maneuvers, highway-speed assist — we verify the fix across the full operating range.
24/24 written warranty
24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labor for both hydraulic and EPS repairs.
Common Power Steering Repair Issues by Model
Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.
Civic
Civics went EPS in 2006 (8th gen). 2006-2011 Civic EPS has a known TSB-covered torque sensor issue — Honda extended warranty on it. We know which models qualify.
Accord
2013+ Accords are EPS — clean systems with rare failures. 2008-2012 Accord V6 was hydraulic and the pump is a common high-mileage failure.
CR-V
Older CR-Vs (pre-2012) were hydraulic. EPS CR-Vs occasionally show torque sensor drift after major impacts — fixable with HDS calibration.
Pilot
Pilots stayed hydraulic longer than other Hondas — many 2012-2015 Pilots still are. The rack-and-pinion is a known leak point at 100k+.
Odyssey
Same story as Pilot — hydraulic on most years. The pump's pulley alignment is critical; we always check after timing belt service.
Acura MDX
Hydraulic on pre-2014 MDXes, EPS thereafter. SH-AWD MDX hydraulic systems run higher pressures — Honda PSF only, never ATF.
Acura TLX
All TLXes are EPS. The Type S has a quicker steering ratio and a unique torque sensor calibration — needs Acura-specific HDS recalibration after any alignment.
Acura RDX
EPS on all RDX years from 2007. 2019+ RDX EPS has a beefier motor and rarely fails — when it does, it's usually a wiring connector issue, not the motor itself.
What Does Power Steering Repair Cost?
Power steering repair pricing splits sharply between hydraulic and electric systems. Hydraulic repairs scale from a $30 fluid flush to a $1,500+ rack replacement. EPS repairs are more often diagnostic and software — a torque sensor recalibration might be $130, but if the motor itself fails, the column or rack-mounted EPS unit can run $1,500-2,500.
We've seen plenty of "power steering pump replacement" jobs that were really just contaminated fluid from someone adding the wrong stuff. Always cheaper to diagnose properly than to replace blind. Our written estimate will tell you exactly what's needed and why.
Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.
Typical Honda / Acura Ranges
-
PS / EPS diagnostic + HDS $130 – $180
Applied to repair. Required on EPS systems.
-

Why Choose Nalley's for Power Steering Repair?
Honda PSF only
We never substitute ATF or generic "universal" fluid in a Honda hydraulic system. They will eat your rack seals.
EPS diagnostic via HDS
Honda EPS codes live on body CAN — generic OBD readers can't see them. We can.
Diagnose before replacing
Many "failed pumps" are just contaminated fluid. Many "failed EPS units" just need recalibration. We diagnose first.
Calibration after alignment
EPS torque sensor must be recalibrated after alignment or suspension work. Most shops skip this. We don't.
TSB-aware
We know which model years qualify for Honda's extended EPS warranty — and we'll tell you before you spend out-of-pocket.
24/24 written warranty
Two years or 24,000 miles on parts and labor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.
My power steering whines — what is it?
On hydraulic systems, either low fluid level or a failing pump bearing. Top off with Honda PSF (only Honda PSF — never ATF) and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't, the pump bearing is on its way out.
Can I use ATF instead of Honda power steering fluid?
No. Honda PSF is a specific formulation that lubricates the unique seal material in Honda racks. ATF, generic PSF, and "universal" fluids will swell or dissolve those seals within a few months.
My EPS warning light is on. Is the car safe to drive?
You'll lose power assist and steering will feel heavy — particularly at low speed. The car is still steerable but parking will be difficult. Get it diagnosed within a few days.
Does Honda EPS use any fluid?
No. Electric Power Steering is fully electric — there's no reservoir, no pump, no fluid. If your shop is talking about "flushing your EPS fluid," walk away.
My steering went heavy after an alignment. What happened?
Most likely the EPS torque sensor needs recalibration via HDS. Alignment shifts the column/rack baseline, and EPS uses the centered position as zero. Fixable in 10 minutes with the right tool.
Is there a Honda extended warranty for EPS?
Yes — Honda extended warranty on 2006-2011 Civic EPS torque sensors and a few other models. We can check your VIN against open service campaigns before quoting.
How long does a Honda power steering pump last?
Typically 120,000-180,000 miles on hydraulic systems if fluid is properly maintained. Pump life drops dramatically with contaminated or wrong-spec fluid.
Why is my rack leaking after I had it done elsewhere?
Most common cause: someone used ATF or universal PSF. Honda rack seals are not compatible — they swell, then leak. The rack is usually unrecoverable at that point.
Can I replace just the rack bushings?
On some Honda models, yes — particularly older Accords and CR-Vs. We inspect the rack first and tell you whether bushings alone will fix the play or whether you're looking at a full rack replacement.
How long does a rack replacement take?
Most Honda rack jobs are a full day in the shop — 4-6 hours of labor plus an alignment afterward. We always quote alignment in the rack-replacement price.
EPS Warning? Steering Whine? Get It Diagnosed.
We service both hydraulic and electric Honda steering — with Honda PSF, HDS calibration, and no guessing.
